Seumalo vs. The field in the right guard competition for the Eagles

WWe’re getting closer to Eagles Boot Camp so we’re taking a look at five notable boot camp competitions.

Up first: the right guard.

The Eagles went into last season hoping three-time Pro Bowler Brandon Brooks would get over his injuries and get back to his prime. But this did not happen. Brooks got injured in the second week and the Eagles ended up using five different right guards last season.

In this off season, Brooks retired and now the Eagles have to figure out how to replace him.

One of those five players who started a right-guard match last season was Landon Dickerson’s second-round pick. But the Eagles plan to leave Dickerson in the left guard position, where he begins to thrive as a novice.

That leaves the right guard’s place as the only question mark on the offensive line who might be the best in the NFL.

Let’s look at the players:

Isaac Sumalo

Age: 28
Experience: Year 7 (64 games, 43 games)
Size: 6 feet – 4 – 303 pounds

Veteran Siomalu is the most likely candidate for this job. The Eagles put their former left guard on the right side during the OTAs and that starting position looks like the loser.

When he’s healthy, Seumalo has proven to be a good goalkeeper in the NFL. If you still think he’s smelly, it’s time to get over his early career struggles. Because from 2018 onwards, Seumalo has been doing fine. The biggest problem for him was the injury. Since starting all 16 games in the 2019 season, Seumalo has played only 12 games over the past two years. Now he came off an injury at Lisfranc that ended his season in 2021 during the third game of the season. But if – and that’s important – Seumalo is healthy, he should be a starter in the right keeper.

Jack Driscoll

Age: 25
Experience: Year 3 (20 games, 13 games)
Size: 6 feet – 5, 312 pounds

The Eagles used a fourth-round selection against Driscoll outside of Auburn in 2020 and he has proven to be a versatile reserve player who can play point guards and tackles. Driscoll started 13 games in his career, including eight for the right guard in 2021. ProFootballFocus ranked Driscoll as the top 20 goalkeeper in the NFL last season. In fact, Driscoll finished with a score higher than Dickerson.

But, like Seumalo, Driscoll has struggled to stay healthy, too. The Driscoll 2021 campaign ended in late November, when the team placed him in IR for the second time in the season. Ideally, Driscoll would still be the sixth man in the offensive line, ready to fill the void if anyone else was hurt.

Sawa Opita

Age: 25
Experience: Year 4 (18 games, 4 starts)
Size: 6 feet-4, 305 pounds

Opita has been with the Eagles since they signed him as an uncredited free agent outside Webber State in 2019. Opita was a project at the time, but offensive line coach Jeff Stutland turned him into a viable option for the offensive line. He was behind Driscoll on the depth chart, but Obita was already called up to start the playoff in Tampa this past January. In that match, he was solid, only giving up two pressures. But he will most likely play a backup role in 2022.

Cam Jurgens

Age: 22
Experience: Beginner
Size: 6 feet -3 303 pounds

The Eagles coined Jurgens as the ultimate replacement for legend Jason Kelsey. But Kelsey is still on the list in 2022 and the Eagles have been training with Jurgens as center and guard. A second-round pick would surely serve as the centerpiece in the NFL but all backups would have to be able to play multiple points. This summer he will have a chance to prove that he can play the guard role.

the rest

Aside from these names, the Eagles have a few other Rangers on the roster who will fight for positions on the roster but won’t have a legitimate chance of winning the starting quest. Kayode Awosika, Josh Sills, William Dunkle, Jack Anderson and even Brett Toth are another backup offensive lineman who could play a guard.
