Turning to GeoEngineering Climate solutions, MIT has found a mitigation method that works from space

Think of it as cool sunglasses for the planet…

As some of you may realize, for a variety of reasons* (primarily utilitarian), I am an advocate of Big Science solutions for climate mitigation**. Well, because of that interest, Google Newsfeed just informed me of another such method – except that this method works from space, rather than getting valuable real estate here on Earth.

NB: MIT itself places this cautionary qualification on a proposed sunscreen solution:

footnote 2: MIT’s solution is based on spreading their sunscreen solution, in the gravity-neutral L1 part of space, the Lagrange point (the fulcrum between the Earth and the sun). Clever, it’s a similar gravitationally stable site that grazes the James Webb Space Telescope around the sun – with minimal course corrections required.

MIT scientists think they’ve figured out how to completely reverse climate change

The idea largely revolves around the creation and publication of many similar thin films silicone bubbles. “Space Bubbles” as they refer to it, will be joined together like a raft. Once expanded into space it will be around Same size as Brazil. You will save bubbles afterwards Extra insulation against harmful solar radiation that comes from the sun.

MIT researchers have taken the same basic concept [a “cloud” of small spacecraft] And I improved it, though, by altering the inflatable silicon bubbles for the spacecraft that Engel had originally suggested. The ability to reverse climate change would be a huge step in the right direction. However, protecting the Earth from the sun’s radiation will only be one part of it. We still need to reduce other things as well.

The researchers say we may still need to put some kind of spacecraft in there to help keep things on track. But you can give us A good chance of reversing climate change, or at least slowing down the changes. […]

I have to admit, I’m a bit taciturn on the scale of this solution. What if it filtered out a large amount of solar radiation, is the first question that comes to mind. But again at a rapid pace, the highly trapped solar radiation is exactly the problem, we as a technological civilization are having to hope to survive past 2100. Heck, the way most climate prediction models have the effects of feedback amplification is underestimated, up to 2050 Without a serious societal breakdown, it could be an extension.

It would be nice to have “last hope” mitigations in the back pocket, just in case all else fails. Hopefully we will never have to spread it widely, as governments take on the challenge of reducing carbon. Once they do, these successes may spur some urgency to figure out how to stop the methane freight train that’s flowing down the planet’s warming timeline.

After all the governments of the world very skilled Take proactive steps to solve big problems – and by that I mean, Not much.

* Some of the reasons why I am a supporter of Big Science Mitigation Solutions:

  1. Utilitarianism, the time for us to ramp up course corrections, is quickly running out.
  2. The scale of the problem is global.
  3. Most scientists are very smart.
  4. Governments are slow to react, especially on any scale that goes beyond half-measures.
  5. Big Science got us into this mess, and Big Science might be able to get out.
  6. Feedback loops accelerate ecosystem risks from climate change.

There are a few Big Science climate mitigation solutions** that I think have advantages:

  1. Carbon Capture: Mechanical Trees.

  2. Carbon capture: sowing of plankton flowers.

  3. Carbon families: seaweed/algae farms.
  4. Carbon capture: flue purification.
  5. tidal force

  6. geothermal tapping;

  7. Breakthroughs in fuel cells and the battery.

  8. Carbon dioxide/methane enzyme breakthroughs.
  9. Huge wind farms.
  10. Huge solar farms.
  11. Huge reforestation.
  12. Think globally, act locally.

We only have one planet. There is no planet B, to save us from our predicament.
